On especially hot and/or humid days, we take extra precautions to ensure everyone at camp stays cool and healthy. Below are just a few of the things we do at camp to prevent heat exhaustion.
- We have two free swims: one during rest period, and another at the end of the day. Including daily swim instruction, all kids are strongly encouraged to get into the pool 3 times on the hottest days.
- Counselors lead activities designed to keep kids cool. These activities often involve water, are in the shade, and do not include strenuous physical activity.
- We set aside extra time for water breaks during each activity and add extra ice to each water cooler.
- We have extra large fans that we put in the shire to circulate even more air around the kids during juice break, lunch, rest hour, and free play. This helps to facilitate evaporative cooling.
- We require all kids to travel with a full water bottle on the bus at the end of the day.
- All of our staff and volunteers are on the lookout for signs of heat exhaustion, and know to encourage and carefully monitor food and water consumption.
